Proposed Field of ISO Technical Activity to Focus on Re-use of Treated Wastewater in Cities

12/21/2012

SAC, the Chinese member body to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), has submitted a proposal for a new field of technical activity on the re-use of treated wastewater in urban areas. As the U.S. member body to ISO, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) invites all interested stakeholders to submit comments on the proposal by Friday, February 8, 2013.

According to the new work item proposal, the activity would set down general requirements and basic standards for urban sewage treatment and reuse, with a focus on the planning, design, and supervision of urban sewage treatment facilities. The field of activity would cover the classification, recycling, and management of wastewater; however, the use of wastewater for irrigation is already covered by ISO Project Committee (PC) 253, Treated wastewater re-use for irrigation, and would not be examined as part of this proposed field.

All comments on this proposal should be sent to Steven Cornish, ANSI senior director for international policy ([email protected]). Feedback received by the February 8 deadline will be reviewed and compiled for the recommended ANSI position and comment, which will then be presented to the ANSI ISO Council for formal approval.

The full proposal filed by SAC is available here.
