ANSI Releases New Standards Case Studies: Real Stories, Impactful Results

3/19/2026

Standards are much more than technical documents—they are often the baseline of life-changing innovation. Invisible but impactful, standards are the behind-the-scenes components that support safety and create trust in groundbreaking products and processes, supporting everything from hearing aids to smart factories.

Three new additions to ANSI’s Standards Boost Business case studies library illuminate the real-world impact of standards—demonstrating how they create trust, interoperability, and safety assurances that support the marketplace.

Accessible Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids

For decades, hearing aids in the U.S. required a prescription. The Consumer Technology Association (CTA) worked with manufacturers and hearing experts to create a standard to guide affordable, direct-to-consumer hearing aids—and when FDA regulation was revised to include over-the-counter devices, elements of the CTA standard were adopted to underpin the regulation.

The result is greater consumer access and a brighter future for hearing health. Read more about how standard ANSI/CTA-2051 empowers consumers and manufacturers alike.

Safety for E-bikes and E-scooters

E-bikes and e-scooters are changing how we move—but battery fires are a growing threat. Rising to this challenge, UL Standards & Engagement (ULSE) developed key safety standards for e-mobility devices—which eventually prompted legislative action.

Read about how safety standards for e-mobility and public awareness work together to drive policy changes and protect communities, starting with the passage of New York City’s Local Law 39.

Precision Water Pipe Sizing

While pipe sizing has long relied on an outdated formula, IAPMO’s Water Demand Calculator® replaces guesswork with a data-driven approach—accurately predicting peak water demand in single-family homes and apartment buildings.

Incorporated into the 2018 Uniform Plumbing Code, an American National Standard, the method enables proper sizing that saves consumers on both water and water-heating utility bills for the life of the plumbing system.

Read more about IAPMO’s efforts to cut material costs, conserve water, and reduce energy use.

Do you have a standards success story?  We want to hear it!

Submit a case study for the Standards Boost Business webpage.

Guidelines:

  • Case studies should be about 300-400 words, with content organized into three sections: Challenge, Solution, and Impact.
  • Case studies should reference a specific standard or standards and demonstrate how adherence to the standard(s) has boosted business (improved ROI, competitive advantage, cost reduction, increased revenue, etc.), sustainability, or safety and well-being.

Links to online sources and references are welcome. Send submissions to [email protected]. Case studies will be included at ANSI’s discretion.
