Standards Are Strategic: ANSI’s Laurie Locascio on IFAN Podcast

4/13/2026

In the latest International Federation of Standards Users (IFAN) podcast, ANSI president and CEO Dr. Laurie E. Locascio makes the case for why standards participation is a strategic imperative. The episode explores ANSI’s role in the rapidly shifting global standards ecosystem, the urgency of keeping pace with technologies like quantum and AI, and ANSI’s efforts to foster international collaboration.

“Standards aren't just technical, they’re strategic,” Locascio reflected. “By joining the process and having a voice at the table, you help set the rules for that technology as it moves forward.”

With respect to international collaboration to keep pace with emerging digital technologies, Locascio noted the consequences of fragmentation. “If we don't collaborate, what’s going to happen is we’ll end up with a completely fragmented, incompatible standards regime in various parts of the world. Ultimately, that ends up in higher cost, duplicate testing, slower innovation overall, globally, slower technology diffusion out to the market.”
