ASCET and Chicago Quantum Exchange Identify Standardization Priorities to Accelerate Quantum Commercialization

The Advancing Standardization for Critical and Emerging Technologies (ASCET) Center of Excellence (CoE) has released a new Insights Brief identifying standardization priorities raised by leaders across the quantum ecosystem.

The brief captures findings from the ASCET-Chicago Quantum Exchange (CQE) workshop held March 31, 2026, in Chicago, which brought together leaders from industry, academia, and government to identify where standardization can help the quantum sector scale more efficiently, align with existing infrastructure, and encourage international participation. The brief frames early participation in standardization as a strategic lever for shaping competitive advantage and enabling more efficient commercialization pathways.

Key findings include strategic challenges facing the broader quantum ecosystem:

• inconsistent terminology across sectors, creating barriers to collaboration, market understanding, and adoption;
• growing urgency to integrate quantum and classical technologies within existing infrastructure and operational environments;
• readiness gaps across organizations and the workforce that must be addressed before standards development can mature and scale; and
• the need for a clear, accessible roadmap that enables organizations of all sizes to engage in standardization activities and influence future requirements.

The findings will inform future ASCET workshops across quantum and the initiative’s three other priority technology areas: AI, biotechnology, and semiconductors and microelectronics. The work will contribute to broader efforts to strengthen U.S. technology leadership, build standards-ready workforces, and improve the nation’s long-term competitiveness in critical and emerging technologies.
