ISO and IEC Publish Updated Guidance on the Use of AI in Standards Development

6/29/2026

ISO and the IEC have released a new version of Guidance on the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for IEC and ISO Technical Committees (Version 2.0, 2026), offering practical direction on the responsible use of AI within Technical Committees.

Access the full document on the ISO and IEC websites.

The document outlines acceptable AI use cases across three categories of tools—individual tools, national member licensed tools, and ISO/IEC licensed tools—and clarifies the roles and responsibilities of officers and experts participating in technical work. Grounded in principles of accountability, respect for privacy, avoidance of bias, safety by design, and transparency, it also addresses key considerations related to confidentiality, intellectual property, and data protection.

The guidance is designed to help committee members leverage AI to enhance efficiency and creativity while safeguarding the integrity and trust of the international standards development process.

Join the Conversation at the ANSI Innovation Summit

The role of AI in modernizing standards development will also be a focus at the 2026 ANSI Innovation Summit, July 28–31 at the Grand Hyatt Denver. Two Tuesday, July 28 sessions are particularly relevant:

  • Standards at the Speed of Innovation: A Fireside Chat with Standards CEOs (1:00–2:15 p.m.), where ANSI president and CEO Dr. Laurie E. Locascio sits down with leaders from ICC, SAE International, ASTM International, UL Standards & Engagement, and ATIS for a candid conversation on how development models can become more flexible, iterative, and responsive to rapid technological change.
  • The Standards Lab: Testing New Development Approaches (2:30–4:00 p.m.), featuring speakers from NIST, NEMA, ISA, and the Linux Foundation on how SDOs are using AI, agile review mechanisms, and fast-track pathways to accelerate consensus-based processes without sacrificing rigor.

Register for the Summit.
