Call for U.S. Interest in International Standards Committees on Innovative Logistics: ISO TC 344 and SC 1

ANSI is seeking to identify stakeholders interested in participating in standardization activities for innovative logistics – specifically ISO Technical Committee (TC) 344, Innovative Logistics, and Subcommittee (SC) 1, Retail Logistics. Responses are requested by September 18, 2026.

Background Information

In late 2025, China’s national standards body (SAC) proposed a new standards committee on courier services within ISO. The approved proposal was allocated as a new subcommittee to ISO TC 344: SC 2, Courier Services. The United States is now a participating member of the SC, with the Express Association of America serving as the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) administrator.

Currently, the United States is not a participating member of TC 344 or SC 1. ANSI is seeking to gauge interest in TC 344 and SC 1 by U.S. stakeholders. ANSI is aware of work items being discussed in both committees on AI and data exchange in logistics; drone logistics safety; Environmental, Social, and Governance standards for logistics; logistics performance indicators; unmanned stores; and smart warehousing, among other topics relevant to a wide spectrum of the logistics industry.

The scope statements of TC 344 and SC 1 are as follows:

ISO TC 344, Innovative logistics

Standardization of services, technologies, and management in the field of logistics, specifically including the forward and reverse process of distributing goods, parcels, and letters from suppliers or senders to manufacturers or distributors, via logistics facilities such as regional hubs and distribution centers, and ultimately to final users or recipients, in order to improve the quality, safety, and efficiency of distribution operations, and to enhance the stability, flexibility, and sustainability in logistics.

The scope will include, but is not limited to:

• Development of general requirement, framework, metrics, guidance, performance indicator, evaluation for innovative logistics, etc.
• Innovative provision of service assurance for logistics (e.g., innovative operation of distribution center including overseas warehouse in cross-border trade, capacity building for operators, etc.)
• Innovative operation, service, and synergy optimization in logistics (e.g., order processing, cargo consolidation, sorting, picking, storage [including overseas warehousing], repackaging and protective handling, loading, unloading, capacity allocation, shipping, distribution, other customized services, etc.)

Excluded: Relevant work within the scopes of the following committees:

• ISO TC 34, Food products
• ISO TC 51, Pallets for unit load method of materials handling
• ISO TC 122, Packaging
• ISO TC 154, Processes, data elements, and documents in commerce, industry, and administration

• ISO TC 315, Cold chain logistics
• ISO TC 321, Transaction assurance in E-commerce

Standardization of technologies and services in the field of retail sector to support innovative logistics.

How to Get Involved

ANSI will convene a U.S. stakeholder call on potential participation in these committees. The call will gauge participation interest from U.S.-based companies and organizations, allow dialogue among interested parties, and review what the formation of a U.S. TAG requires (should the United States wish to participate).
