Investment in AI, quantum, and cybersecurity is climbing, but the workforce prepared to apply and secure these technologies needs to keep pace. A new blog from ANSI’s Workcred division explores what it will take to close the gap—and why technical skills alone are not enough.
Talisa Jackson-Nguyen, Ph.D., senior manager at Workcred, points to a widening shortfall: three open quantum jobs for every qualified candidate, only about one percent of the workforce with advanced AI skills, and more than half a million unfilled cybersecurity positions in the U.S. alone. Without parallel investment in talent, she cautions, organizations risk building tools that few people are prepared to use, apply, or secure.
Drawing on Workcred’s Accreditation Model for Cybersecurity Competency-Based Community Clinics, the blog argues that critical thinking, adaptability, communication, creativity, and problem-solving must be developed alongside technical proficiency. Jackson-Nguyen also points to emerging research suggesting that overreliance on AI may weaken the very competencies workers need to use it well.
