ASSP Announces Shift to Powered Action to Isolate Top Workplace Hazards

1/14/2026

The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) has unveiled a new strategy targeting the root causes of serious workplace injuries and fatalities, aiming to eliminate barriers that prevent effective action and better protect workers from on-the-job incidents—from construction sites to shop floors.

Rather than accepting workplace incidents as an “inevitable cost of doing business,” ASSP reports that it is focusing on isolating top hazards and neutralizing their causes at the source. As part of its strategy, the organization is addressing two of the top drivers of Serious Injuries and Fatalities (SIF): falls from heights and improper lockout/tagout (which can cause hazardous energy releases).

“We recognize that safety and health excellence cannot be achieved in a vacuum,” said ASSP president Linda Tapp. “By uniting our rigorous standards with the cutting-edge capabilities of our technology partners, we are moving safety and health from a policy page to the front line. This is safety and health by industry, for industry, where businesses lead businesses to protect our most valuable asset: our people.”
