National Waste & Recycling Association Debuts “Skip the Bin! Turn Your Batteries In!” Campaign

1/14/2026

In an effort to help families understand when and how to safely dispose batteries, the National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) recently debuted its new campaign with the slogan: “Skip the Bin, Turn Your Batteries In!”

Improperly disposed batteries, particularly lithium-ion batteries found in everyday electronics such as phones, laptops, and other personal devices, can rapidly overheat, vent, or ignite when damaged or crushed in garbage trucks or recycling facilities. In fact, catastrophic losses caused by fires at waste processing facilities have risen 41% in the last five years, NWRA reports.

As part of its campaign, unveiled during the recent CES week, NWRA has launched a webpage featuring battery facts and tips on how to dispose batteries safety. The campaign features Woodsy Owl, a conservation mascot.

“For over 50 years, Woodsy Owl has helped generations of Americans care for the places we love—and now he’s teaming up with families to keep homes safe from battery fires,” said Michael E. Hoffman, NWRF president and CEO. “We’re delighted to share Woodsy’s refreshed message nationwide and make it easy for parents and kids to take simple steps that keep devices powered—and households protected—across the United States.”
