With Thanksgiving around the corner, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is offering a few simple downloadable safety tips to keep yourself, family, and friends safer from fire.
Did you know that cooking causes 52% of all reported home fires and 36% of home fire injuries, and is a leading cause of home fire deaths (16%)?
Aside from the obvious safety precautions such as keeping knives out of the reach of children, NFPA offers tips that may be overlooked by many: When cooking a turkey with a fryer, only buy an infrared fryer or electric turkey fryer that has been listed by a qualified testing laboratory.
“Thanksgiving is a hectic holiday with multiple dishes cooking and baking at the same time, and along with guests, entertaining, and other distractions, it can be easy to lose sight of what’s on the stove or in the oven,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of outreach and advocacy at NFPA. “With all these factors at play, it’s no surprise that we consistently see a dramatic spike in home cooking fires on Thanksgiving.”
