SAE International’s Q&A with Jonathan Morrison, the newly appointed administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), reveals new challenges and opportunities related to AI and automation in transportation.
Morrison, whose expertise spans law, policy, and the automotive industry, reflects on gaining public trust in automated vehicles. “Companies can foster public trust by being transparent in their operations, developing a strong safety culture, being open about and learning from mistakes, and working closely with community leaders,” he said. “But it’s also critically important to recognize that while new advanced technologies, especially vehicles [AVs], offer potential benefits in terms of safety and efficiency, they are complex and introduce risks unique to each application.”
