ULSE’s New President and CEO Reflects on New Leadership, Importance of Standards

2/06/2025
In a recent op-ed, Jeff Marootian, the new president and CEO of UL Standards & Engagement (ULSE), focuses on the critical role of safety science and advocacy, and ULSE’s role in standards in shaping safety.

Marootian spent over 20 years leading energy, transportation, and sustainability projects while helping to develop industry standards. He was recently the acting assistant secretary of the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy before joining ULSE this month.

“One thing is clear: the world is changing at a pace we’ve never seen before. Every advancement brings both progress and new risk,” Marootian noted. “In some cases, the standards to address these threats don’t yet exist — and that’s where our work is so critical. Raising awareness, convening the right stakeholders, and driving solutions is how we make a difference.”
