Groundwater constitutes the world’s largest freshwater reserve, supplying nearly half of the global population with drinking water, supporting irrigation and ecosystems, and serving as a critical buffer against hydrological extremes, such as droughts and floods.
However, the new proposal asserts that there is currently no comprehensive international framework that addresses the full scope of groundwater resource conservation, development, monitoring, and integration with broader water management strategies.
Submitted by the Korea Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS), the proposal for a new ISO Technical Committee (TC) includes the following scope statement:
“Standardization of methods, procedures, instruments, and equipment related to measurement, estimation, prediction, and intervention for groundwater availability and behaviour, in order to ensure the sustainable management of groundwater resources through their conservation, protection, remediation, rehabilitation, efficient use, and risk assessment.”
