ANSI has launched a new interactive graphic illustrating how voluntary consensus standards power innovation across critical and emerging technology sectors, and everyday life. “Standards Are Everywhere, Sparking Innovation” features 121 standards from 76 organizations across 14 technology sectors, spanning artificial intelligence, quantum computing, cybersecurity, 5G/6G, clean energy, electric vehicles, biotechnology, advanced manufacturing, autonomous vehicles, semiconductors, space and aerospace, smart cities, and more.
The graphic debuted at ANSI’s 2026 Innovation Summit in Denver and is now available on ansi.org as a shareable resource.
The standards featured were drawn from across the U.S. standardization system, including work by ANSI-accredited standards developers, government agencies, international bodies, and industry consortia, representing the collective effort of thousands of technical experts and contributors. The graphic also introduces Igni, ANSI’s visual ambassador for the catalytic power of standardization. Inspired by the U.S. Standards Strategy 2025, Igni represents the spark that happens when standards ignite innovation, enable collaboration, and illuminate pathways to progress. Users can try to spot the character’s many cameo appearances hidden throughout the scene.
These 121 represent just a sample of the thousands of standards driving innovation, safety, and progress across all aspects of life. The Data on Standards and Innovation
A 2026 study by researchers at BRELA Research in Economics and Legal Analytics and Northwestern University’s Center on Law, Business, and Economics found that standardization and innovation are deeply intertwined in critical and emerging technologies, with patents frequently citing standards as foundational knowledge. The data showed that the standards most associated with innovation are developed by international, non-profit, consensus-based bodies. Read more.
