ANSI Standards Developer
Accreditation Process

Step 6: ANSI ExSC Decision and Announcement

Following the ANSI Executive Standards Council (ExSC)’s vote, the applicant and all public commenters on record are notified by ANSI in writing as to whether the application for accreditation was approved, and the decision is announced in Standards Action.

Here's what you do

  • If you are formally notified that your application was approved, your organization is now an ANSI-Accredited Standards Developer (ASD) and may begin proposing documents as American National Standards (ANS).
  • If your application is not approved, you may reapply after taking corrective action to address the reason(s) for the ExSC's decision to disapprove, or you may appeal the decision within 15 working days of the notification.

Useful tips

  • As noted in Step 5, the ExSC will work with an applicant to allow you the opportunity to remedy any procedural flaws in a proposed application and procedures before the ExSC decision is issued. This may lengthen the approval process, but it enhances an applicant’s ability to meet ANSI’s requirements and achieve accreditation.
  • In addition to the applicant's right to appeal, any public commenter on record also has the right to appeal the ExSC's decision. An appeal by a materially affected party of a standards developer's accreditation status – including regarding your procedures and how you implement them – may be made at any time.
  • Section 17 of the Operating Procedures of the ANSI Executive Standards Council covers the ExSC's hearing of appeals.
